2007 Jeep J8 ‘Sarge’ seen at the 09 Easter Jeep Safari

Jeep J8 We had 1 day to run around to various booths while at the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab and spent alot of time at Jeep’s booth.  The next couple of posts are dedicated to some of the cool vehicles we seen – This is the 2007 Jeep J8 ‘Sarge’.

From pickuptrucks.com: Like the legendary Willys MB from World War II, the standard-issue Jeep J8 is a military-spec support vehicle built to serve a variety of missions in the field, from troop carrying to ambulance services. But it’s not for American soldiers or civilians: The J8 is manufactured in Cairo, strictly for the Egyptian military.

The starting point for all Jeep J8s is the Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited platform. Special body and frame structural upgrades give the J8 its military rating, including a beefed-up frame, a Dana 60 rear axle mounted on leaf springs, larger front discJeep J8 brakes, and exclusive-to-the-J8 17-by-8-inch steel wheels with larger 5-by-5.5-inch bolt patterns. Command-Trac four-wheel drive and a Trac-Lok limited-slip rear differential give the J8 aggressive offroad capabilities.

The J8 powertrain consists of VM Moturi’s 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine — producing 158 horsepower and 295 pounds-feet of torque — mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. It’s the same engine formerly offered in the Jeep Liberty compact SUV in 2005 and 2006, but cancelled due to stronger federal emissions standards.

To create the Sarge, Mopar Underground added a 3-inch lift, using Superlift front coil spacers, 35-inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain tires, offroad rocker steps from Jeep’s trail accessory catalog, and a custom cargo top. It’s painted olive green with military markings that include silhouettes of toy soldiers.

Rich from JP Coolers climbing Potato Salad in Moab at the 2009 Easter Jeep Safari

We had a very good trip to the 2009 Easter Jeep Safari and will blog about it more in the near future with additional pictures and videos.  In the meantime, enjoy this video of Rich from www.jpcooler.com climbing Potato Salad.  It looked like he was going to go straight up, but got caught up on the step at the very top.  After a few minutes of trying different lines, he made it up.

2009 Easter Jeep Safari

April 4th - 12th

Red RockOff Road Trail Tools will be at the Easter Jeep Safari again this year, stop by and see us!  We’ll post more pics and info as the event comes and goes.

Easter Jeep Safari consists of trail rides, mostly day long trips, departing from Moab Utah throughout the 9 day long event. The official event is hosted by the Red Rock 4-Wheelers Inc. one of the the local four wheel drive clubs of Moab. Participants provide their own four wheel drive vehicle, take care of their own food and non-alcoholic beverages for the trip. Suggested essentials, beyond plenty of water, include sun protection, and layered clothing in case of changing weather circumstances that are always a possibility during the spring in southeastern Utah.

Information about the Jeep Safari <from www.centralpt.com>

The Jeep Safari was started in 1967 by the Moab Chamber of Commerce. The very 1st trail was "Behind the Rocks Trail" (according to what has been told to the club President, the road was made or improved with a BLM employee and equipment.) The "Moab Rim" was then added the next year. In those days, individual ice cream packages were dropped by airplane to the trails at lunch. All the leaders were Chamber members, there was no charge or entry fee, and only a Saturday trail. To register you showed up Saturday morning and signed up for the trail you wanted. The Safari was run this way through 1982 at which point the BLM required a permit and insurance. The Chamber was no longer able to run the safari and approached the club to run this event.

The Jeep Safari itself, and participation in the event has grown since the club officially formed in the early 80s. Once the event was coordinated by the Red Rock 4-Wheelers, the registration moved from the Chamber building north of town, to Lion’s Park, and on to what was called "the Barn" which is where McStiff’s is currently located near Center and Main. Over the years the increase in participation grew to expand the trail riding to more days until it finally reached a nine day event. "Big Saturday" still remains the culmination of the event on the Saturday of Easter weekend. With the increase in numbers, the registration was moved to the Spanish Trail Arena where it is located today several miles south of the city of Moab on highway 191. This also became the location for the raffle, Boy Scout BBQ dinner, and vendor showcase.

Off Road Trail Tools will be at TDS again this year, stop by and see us!  We’ll post more pics and info as the event comes and goes.

This year we are returning to the Truckhaven hills in the Northern Area of the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area, for a weekend of exceptional wheeling, awesome vendors, world famous raffles and the opportunity to support the fight to keep our lands open. Base camp and TDS headquarters will be located 23 miles east from Christmas Circle (Borrego Springs) on S-22 or 3.0 miles west of state highway 86. The exact GPS coordinates are N 33 15.691 W 116 00.857. It is hard to fathom that a family oriented group of 4-wheeling enthusiasts created a club named Tierra Del Sol and have been organizing an event like Desert Safari since 1964, but it is true, and quite frankly we need the offroading communities support to keep it going.

You will have the opportunity to see the latest products, talk directly to the experts and expand your arsenal of information with over 80 vendors present onsite. There will be family oriented games and events for all ages. Of course there is the famous TDS Safari raffle, this year with over $100,000 in prizes and KGB’s radio personality “Chris Boyer” as the master of ceremonies.

On Friday onsite registration starts at 12:00 noon and closes at 10 pm with registration reopening at 6:30 am on Saturday. The Saturday run will leave from campsite, promptly at 8 am for a trip in Sandy Washes, Rocky Canyons and Scenic Ridges of the best 4-Wheelin’ in the area. Easier routes are marked “Green” to by-pass some of the harder/steeper trails. On Sunday we will have a GPS Safari Run and a ROUGH RUN both starting at 8 am.
